Per definition, barcode scanners are devices for machine reading of barcodes of various types. The surface is scanned with light, e.g. LED or laser.

As with other scanners (e.g. flat-board scanners), the functionality of barcode scanners is based on light pulses. The scanner illuminates the surface with LED or laser and uses sensors to detect light or dark areas, i.e. the optical differences within the barcode. These can be, for example, barcodes or 2D barcodes such as QR codes. This optical information is decoded by software and converted into corresponding data records. The transfer of information depends on the scanner type: radio barcode scanners or wireless barcode scanners use Bluetooth or WLAN, for example, while USB barcode scanners are connected to the computer via cable.

• 1D codes: The classic form of codes are one-dimensional or linear barcodes. These visualize the data using parallel lines that vary in width and distance from one another. Most of the information to be encrypted is shown in plain text under the barcode. These include EAN codes (European Article Number), which are mainly used in retail, or Code128, which is particularly common in logistics.
• 2D codes: The next level of the 1D codes are two-dimensional barcodes or matrix codes. Instead of lines, geometric patterns such as rectangles, points or hexagons are used. The codes offer a higher data density and can therefore store more information. The best-known form of 2D barcodes are QR codes, which have established themselves primarily through use with smartphones. In addition, larger amounts of data are encoded in data matrix codes, which are commonly used for labeling goods and pallets in trade and manufacturing.

• Wired barcode scanners: Barcode scanners that are connected to the computer via USB cable and transfer the recorded data this way, are inexpensive to buy. They are particularly suitable for use at fixed stations in manufacturing or in healthcare. The scanners are robust and easy to use.
• Wireless barcode scanners: The wireless alternative offers more flexibility when capturing barcodes. They do not require much training either and can be used intuitively. Employees can use the handheld scanners on the move, as the data is transmitted via radio (wireless LAN or Bluetooth connection). A wireless scanner is therefore the ideal way to start digitizing your company.
• Industrial barcode scanners: Industrial barcode scanners are characterized by their particularly robust casing. They are powerful and mostly IP certified. This means that they can be used without hesitation in demanding environments such as warehousing or production. Both mobile radio barcode scanners and USB scanners are used in industrial barcode scanners.
• Stationary barcode scanners: Stationary scanners are permanently installed scanning units that are suitable for continuous use in manufacturing, retail and healthcare thanks to their automatic object recognition and the possibility of remote control and uninterrupted scanning.
